Decorative vents are an integral part of the home renovation process. We feel the little details make the design and vents have definitely come a long way! There are many options for consumers to choose from and it can be overwhelming as a homeowner to decide what’s right for your home. We will take a deep dive into the world of decorative vents and list out pros and cons for some popular options that are available on the market. Our helpful tips will make it easier for you to select the right vents for your home!

There are three kinds of vents you could have in your home: floor, ceiling, or wall.

Metal Floor Vents

  • Available in a variety of design styles from modern to traditional.
  • Available from big box stores making them easy to access and replace when needed.
  • Available in flush mount or drop-in installation methods.
  • Most affordable option on the market making it very popular amongst homeowners!
  • Very noticeable in the overall design of the home and do not provide an elevated or luxe finish.

Wooden Floor Vents

  • Can be custom-made to match wood flooring. This guarantees an exact colour match and seamless transition throughout the home.
  • Available in flush mount or drop-in installation methods.
  • Mid-high-end price point if these are being custom-made.
  • Provide a luxe finish for your home interior and give it a nice finishing touch.
  • Custom vents need to be made by a supplier. Wooden vents that are available in big box stores may not be an exact match to wood flooring.

Aria Floor Vents

  • High-end option on the market. Homeowners will have to fork out more from their budget to incorporate these into the design of their homes. Well worth the investment as they provide a high-end luxe finish.
  • A bonus is these can be installed with any type of surface such as hardwood, tiles, and carpet.
  • Provide a sleek and modern look making the vents blend in seamlessly with your home decor.
  • Available in flush mount and drop-in installation.
  • Require professional installation, which will cost more on top of the high price point of the vents.

Plastic Ceiling Vents

  • A great option we would recommend for all ceiling applications as plastic vents are lightweight.
  • Can be painted to match the colour of your ceiling. This is something you cannot do with metal vents as the paint will chip off over time.
  • Available in any big box store, so they are very accessible.
  • The downside of these is that there is not a lot of variety in terms of design styles.
  • Do not provide a high-end finish but painting them to blend to the ceiling helps.

Drywall Wall Vents

  • An excellent option when large vents or air returns are required in the wall. They would be our top recommendation in terms of design style because of the seamless look they provide.
  • Can be painted to match your wall colour.
  • Can be on the pricy side, but worth the investment to complete the overall look of your home,
  • Require professional installation which will add more to the price.

Wooden Wall Vents

  • An excellent alternative to drywall vents if you want to save a little money.
  • Still provide a luxe finish when compared to metal or plastic vents and return air grilles.
  • Can be painted to match the colour of your walls.
  • Available in lots of sizes and design styles to match your home decor. You can go as simple or as detailed as you would like with the design of the grille.
