Decorating a nursery for your little one can be a fun and exciting chapter in your life! The decisions that need to be made can also be overwhelming and come with a lot of stress. We understand that interior design is an investment, and you want your design and decor to last for many years to come! Investing in quality furniture and decor for your little one is always the way to go and we are here to help provide some insightful tips on how to decorate a nursery that your child can with.

Furniture

  • When it comes to furniture, durability should be the number one thing you look for! High-quality furniture will last a long time and will be able to undergo a lot of wear and tear.
  • Choose furniture pieces that can change and adapt as your child grows. There are tons of options on the market for cribs that can be converted into beds. If you are investing a lot in a quality crib, then you will want to use it for many years to come and the flexibility these furniture pieces provide is unmatched!
  • You can make the room feel more like a nursery by the type of bedding you select, even if the crib is made to be turned into a bed in the future and looks more mature for the space. Soft finishes such as bedsheets, toys, cushions, etc. all make the space come together and are easy to replace as your child grows whereas hard finishes should be purchased with durability and longevity in mind.

Decor

  • Select artwork that doesn’t scream “baby” – This will allow you to use it for several years to come and perhaps even in different rooms of the home.
  • We wouldn’t recommend spending too much on high-end decor as it can be changed out once your baby grows and their interests change. When re-using items, it is important to select things that work with the colour scheme of the nursery rather than trying to stick to a specific theme.

Rug

  • The same goes for the rug! Choose a rug that matches your colour scheme and will be suitable for children of all ages.
  •  You will want to re-use it as your child gets older or repurpose it for a different room in the home. If the rug sticks to a rigid theme for the nursery, it is impossible to incorporate into the room as your child grows and even more challenging to reuse within other areas of your home.
  • Select a high-quality rug that feels soft for your little one and is made of good-quality materials. Nursery textiles are very important since your little ones will want something soft and comforting to play on.

Storage

  • Storage is the key to any functional space! Invest in storage solutions your child will eventually be able to use and access on their own easily.
  • Select furniture pieces such as dressers, cribs, beds, change tables, etc. that have additional storage features, such as toe-kick storage drawers or hidden pullout drawers. There is no such thing as having too much storage!

Wallpaper

  • Purchasing and installing wallpaper can be quite pricy so we would advise picking a fun print or colour for an accent wall rather than the entire room. Selecting a timeless print is the way to go since you will be able to design around it as your child grows. Stick to something more general rather than a rigid nursery-themed wallpaper as you will most probably want to replace it within a couple of years.
  • Once again, selecting something that works well with the colour scheme or theme is fine, but try not to select something you will get tired of within a year or so.

Paint

  • A neutral colour is the way to go! We would highly recommend this if you are in the process of designing a nursery. Something calming that you will not grow out of in the years to come! Colours and patterns can be incorporated through soft finishes such as drapery, bedsheets, toys, accessories, and artwork.

Finishes

  • Select classic and timeless finishes to increase the longevity of the space.
  • Our recommendation would be a gender-neutral theme as your child’s interests will change as they grow.
