What Is A Tablescape?

With the holidays just around the corner you might have started thinking about decor you will want to use in your home this year. A tablescape is a general term used to describe your table’s overall look and decor. It can include centerpieces, placemats, and other items displayed on the table. We will look at tips to make your table stand out this holiday season and decor ideas to include for your next holiday tablescape.

General Rules

  • Layering!
    • The key to a successful tablescape is to layer! Layer as many items and elements as possible to add points of interest and make your tablescape more dynamic.
    • If done properly, layering can create a sense of movement throughout your tablescape and will allow your tablescape to not feel so flat.
  • Mix Metals
    • This is a great way to add some sparkle and shine to your holiday tablescape.
    • Don’t be afraid to mix in different metal elements and tie in other home decor elements to your tablescape.
    • Mixing metals is one of the best ways to add interest to any room in your home and can be done in a very tasteful way.
  • Be Practical
    • One of the most important things that homeowners overlook is leaving enough space for food! Make sure your tablescape doesn’t interfere with people being able to sit comfortably at the table.
    • Be mindful of height and ensure people sitting across from one another will still be able to see each other and interact when seated at the table.

Now that you know the fundamentals of designing a tablescape, let’s look at some decor elements that you can incorporate!

1. Table Runner

  • Start your tablescape off with a beautiful holiday table runner.
  • The table runner can be used to set the tone for the design style of your tablescape. Will it be a fun tablescape or something elegant for a big family dinner?
  • Select something with sparkle or points of interest without going over the top as your table will have other elements and points of interest. There will be a lot going on and you don’t want all the elements to compete with each other.
  • A table runner is an excellent way to incorporate soft textures into your tablescape design.

2. Candles

  • Candles are an excellent choice for a holiday tablescape and are a staple for holiday home decor.
  • Select candles and candle holders of various heights to add points of interest along the table.
  • Candle holders come in various materials, sizes, and shapes, so don’t be afraid to mix and match!
  • Keep candles in the centre of the table and away from table mats.

3. Florals and Natural Elements

  • Dried and fresh flowers are both great options! Fresh florals will need to be watered and changed out frequently to keep your tablescape looking lively.
  • Pinecones make a lovely addition to your holiday tablescape and add a natural touch to the table. They can also be displayed in various ways.
  • Adding natural elements is a great way to bring the outdoors into your home! Not only do they add a sense of warmth to a home interior, but they are also a great way to introduce a natural element to your space
  • Florals can be a great opportunity to add in colour and texture to your table.

4. Garlands

  • Garlands are a festive must-have in any home for the holiday season!
  • Adding an element of greenery can help tie in other seasonal decorations to the tablescape.
  • Lighting options can be intertwined within the garland to add sparkle to the table.

5. Holiday Linens

  • Incorporating textures, patterns, and colours is all a part of a successful tablescape design scheme. Tasteful holiday linens are a great way to incorporate these themes into your home.
  • Consider holiday linens for placemats, napkins, etc. and don’t be afraid to splurge a little more on these as they can make or break the design of your holiday tablescape.

6. Ornaments

  • Incorporate fun and tasteful ornaments into your holiday tablescape. There are so many possibilities to display ornaments!
  • They are a great way to incorporate colours and different metal finishes into the design of your home.
